Telkom 1mb ADSL
Telkom is currently testing various new ADSL ‘products and services’ which they hope to launch in the next few weeks.
Telkom is improving in the area of ADSL speed and one such tentative step is the 1 Mbps ADSL service currently under testing. Xolisa Vapi, Senior Specialist in Media Relations at Telkom, stated that the 1 Mbps ADSL trials are looking “very positive” and Telkom have plans to launch this service in the next few weeks.
Telkom are unable to release specific details regarding the cost of this new service but “can assure ADSL consumers that it will be competitively priced”.
Another interesting Telkom ADSL development is a self install option aimed at decreasing installation time. Subscribers can currently wait as long as 2 months for their service after placing an order.
The self-install service will require users to make use of Telkom equipment to alleviate problems with support.
Telkom’s ADSL self install option is also in a testing phase and should be available shortly.
The last big breakthrough from Telkom is AccessMax which is also aimed at improving access and installation time according to JimBob, a MyADSL forum member.
AccessMax makes use of Mini-DSLAM technology which is placed between the exchange and the user’s home or business. A fiber runs between the exchange and the AccessMax box with a copper line then running from the AccessMax to the end user’s premise.
The AccessMax solution offers the same service as current ADSL offerings and there is no difference in price.
“This demonstrates that Telkom is cognizant of delays that users experience when applying for the service and that deploying this technology will further enhance the footprint and availability of the service,” noted Vapi.
